The Bread Oven (A Photo Essay)

Cooking is all about connection, I’ve learned, between us and other species, other times, other cultures (human and microbial both), but, most important, other people. Cooking is one of the more beautiful forms that human generosity takes; that much I sort of knew. But the very best cooking, I discovered, is also a form of intimacy.

Evan Lohr runs 26th Avenue Bread out of a hand-built oven in his front yard. He invites a list of neighbors and friends over every week for a fresh loaf (or three). This time I was lucky enough to catch him on a pizza day, where he was making over 50 personalized pies for the folks who had pre-ordered on this lovely Sunday afternoon.

Enjoy these photos, and if you want to read more about Evan and his bread, check out this piece by local writer Lily Stoicheff in the Fall 2017 issue of Edible Monterey Bay.

It is such a pleasure to be near the ritual baking of grain, water, and air.
